Zoo Welcomes Baby Addra Gazelle!

On January 5, we welcomed the birth of a female addra gazelle! She is our first birth of 2014, and the 295th of her species born at the San Antonio Zoo! Addra gazelles are a critically endangered desert species whose numbers have declined rapidly over the last twenty years. The survival of this species depends on mankind's ability to maintain a healthy and stable captive population as well as protect the few that still exist. In 1967, twenty gazelles from eastern Chad were captured and sent to the United States. Twelve of these were sent to the San Antonio Zoo. The current North American population is entirely descended from the original twenty! Of these, 135 are managed in accredited Zoos including YOUR San Antonio Zoo! Be sure to come visit our new arrival!
